Hymns for Minnie

When I was very young, I remember stopping for visits at ‘Aunt’ Minnie’s home. She had a big old upright piano which I was always asked to play. I would perform all of my most recent (and impressive!) lesson pieces. Minnie would sit patiently and listen attentively.

Finally, when I had finished playing ‘my’ choices, this tiny, gentle woman would express her appreciation and, almost timidly but without missing a beat, ask hopefully, ‘But do you know any hymns?’ She would then list dozens of her favorites, each title punctuated with a question mark as if to say, ‘Do you know this one?’

Here are some I eventually learned with the help of Rev. August Grollmus and the congregation of St. John’s Church in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I’m not sure that these arrangements are what any of those folks might have expected, but I can visualize Minnie sitting in her chair nodding and smiling.
