Lyrics

Fireworks light a summer night;
Roman candles burn in flight.
Songs of celebration sounding
herald now our nation’s founding.
Much there is to bring us joy:
freedoms such as few enjoy,
waving field and flowing water,
sister, brother, son and daughter.

Power is ours to lead and will,
two-edged sword of good and ill.
Now we kneel to earth confessing
we have wrongly used the blessing.
When we kill, some gain to win,
bless, O God; forgive our sin.
When we feast while others languish,
plant in us a holy anguish.

Now in times of shifting might,
as the nations claim their right,
our dominion is decreasing;
may our wisdom be increasing.
Now may we reclaim the call —
justice, freedom for us all,
with a meaning still expanding,
growing with our understanding.

May the dream be born to deed,
may we serve our neighbor’s need,
here at home, in every nation;
this is truly celebration!
Celebrate our liberty!
Honor human unity!
Light the candles, keep them burning;
cherish earth for ever turning.
