• Author Fred Kaan, from his book The Only Earth We Know (Stainer & Bell / Hope Publishing Co., 1999, page 123): “This is a paraphrase of a Sinhalese (Sri Lankan) May Day Service Offering Hymn which I wrote for New Songs of Asian Cities, a small paperback hymnbook published in 1972 by the Urban and Industrial Mission Committee of the Christian Conference of Asia. Serving as a translator and text consultant to the Jakarta Editorial Meeting of this committee will remain in my memory as one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”
• RK: This is one of the most popular collaborations Fred and I have created. It has appeared in the hymnbooks, supplements and collections of many denominations.
The themes of co-creation, justice and healing which run as threads through the verses are rich. We acknowledge, however, that the phrase “Worship the Lord” is problematic for some. For this reason, we suggest “Lift up our hearts” as a possible alternative to the first line of the refrain.
