Lyrics:

We tingle with excitement at the knowledge
that God is love; the Easter-news is true!
We wait upon the prompting of the Spirit
in all the things our talents find to do.
With holiness and beauty on our palette,
we ‘paint the town’ in every hue of praise
and write our poetry of hope and longing
with love and laughter decorate our days.

We raise the roof of cellar and cathedral
with sounds of jazz, with symphony and song,
and pray that in our practice and our playing
the consonance with heaven may be strong.
How can our hearts be still, our feet be idle
through dance and music, colour and design
invited by the One who comes, proclaiming
the Gloria of water into wine?

Let all the world weave tapestries of worship
to God, creation’s origin and crown;
to Christ, the life and soul of Cana’s party
and to the Spirit of the festive round.

Author / Composer Comments

• Author Fred Kaan, from his book The Only Earth We Know (Stainer & Bell / Hope Publishing Co., 1999, page 33): “I was one of five hymnwriters in the world who were invited by the American Lutheran Church to write a hymn to mark the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s birth and baptism in 1483. The hymn was to express ‘the joy of worship/witness as related to the arts.’ It was premiered at a Festival of Worship and Witness in Minneapolis, Minnesota in June 1983.”
