Voice-over God, our Lover and Creator,
whose Word transformed disorder into peace,
who gave to all that is a name, a calling,
by whom all human wisdom was released.
God, give us confidence in living, loving,
the mind, the mood to make this life a feast.

Companion Christ, in human terms among us,
let your redeeming, freeing presence teach
and help us not to measure those around us
by culture, race, by gender, creed or speech,
to look for that which is of God within them,
reach out, give thanks for what is good in each.

Ennobling Spirit, source of strength and passion,
inspire our hearts to hear the voiceless cry,
our will to break the shackles of injustice,
take down the barriers that demean, divide;
to give the hungry bread, the homeless shelter:
life in fullness, that will never die.

• Author Fred Kaan, from his book The Only Earth We Know (Stainer & Bell / Hope Publishing Co., 1999, page 99): “I was commissioned to write a hymn for the 23rd Assembly of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches held in Debrecen, Hungary in 1997. The theme of the meeting was ‘Break the chains of injustice’ (Isaiah 58:6). The use of the term ‘voice-over’ owes its origin to the world of film, radio and television, where an unseen voice is sometimes used to hold the plot together — while the actors each have their own role to play. The first and final Word is often in a ‘voice-over’ mode!”
