Lyrics:

The gentle face of love is shown
in smiles and hugs and prayers;
we’re wrapped in love that is of God
through tears and laughter shared.

When friends are gathered in this place,
Christ-spirit lives and grows.
The strength and healing trusted here
through each to other flows.

The joy of God’s love now enfolds
to claim for life our days.
No power exists to break this bond;
no pain can silence praise.

God, hold in love, in hope, in trust
the moments of our lives
until your new and promised day
in each, for all, shall rise.

Author / Composer Comments

“The Gentle Face of Love” was created during a 2007 visit to our home on Vancouver Island by Walter & Joan Farquharson. Walter wrote the words on November 8 and I composed the music on November 9. During Walter & Joan’s visit, we offered a number of concerts through the islands with Parksville’s Knox United Church Choir. The Farquharson’s also offered workshops for the people of the Parksville and Qualicum Beach area.

The words for “The Gentle Face of Love” were written in response to gatherings and visits with members of the Knox Family of Faith. The completed music was placed before the Knox Choir on Sunday, November 11 (the photocopies were still warm!) so they could sing it in Sunday evening’s concert. The hymn speaks of people living out their faith through word, deed, and (inter)action with others. Profoundly moved by being part of the richly caring family of faith at Knox United Church in Parksville, Walter was inspired to write these lines to articulate his experience.
