Surrounded by a world of need,
by cries for healing, housing, bread,
our mind is given to despair
and hope is undermined by war.

Yet through the fabric of our time
there runs the liberating theme
of love that makes the world go round,
of love creative and profound.

This love is in the face of Christ,
in human life, made manifest,
its strong intent will conquer all,
it raises people when they fall.

Then help us, God, to understand
the claims and blessings of your plan
and use, to bring your reign about,
those in the Church and those without.

• Author Fred Kaan, from his book The Only Earth We Know (Stainer & Bell / Hope Publishing Co., 1999, page 92): “I wrote this in 1966 for the Pilgrim Church in Plymouth [England]. It had its first more public airing in New Church Praise, a paperback supplement to the hard-cover hymnals that were in use in the two denominations (the Presbyterian Church of England and the Congregational Church in England and Wales) which merged in 1972 to become the United Reformed Church in England and Wales.”
