Jesus, Shepherd of our souls,
selfless in your caring,
lead us out to days of peace
and of thoughtful sharing.
Free our life from ill and war,
what is good in us restore.
Jesus, be our Shepherd still,
though the settings alter;
give us for our changing days
faith that will not falter.
Bless us in out modern scene
of computer and machine.
Christ, renew in us the charge
at your rising given:
that the Church in love should bring
to this earth your heaven.
Give us insight, show us how
life is here, the time is now.
May we with a shepherd’s heart
love the people round us,
still recalling how your love
in our straying found us.
Point us to your caring ways,
guide us clearly all our days.
Author / Composer Comments
Author Fred Kaan, from his book The Only Earth We Know (Stainer & Bell / Hope Publishing Co., 1999, page 22): “I wrote this especially for a BBC radio broadcast in 1965 when Good Shepherd Sunday (2nd after Easter) coincided with May Day. As with my paraphrase of Psalm 23 (*I Can, on God, Implicitly Rely*), I have tried to bring the image of pastoral care into the context of our modern technological world.”
Composer Ron Klusmeier: “Fred and I have a deep personal friendship which had its beginnings in the early 1970s. I remember receiving this text from him at one of our earliest meetings. A melody simply would not come easily at that time and, rather than force it, I abandoned it. More than three decades later, in 2004, I happened to place these words in front of me at the piano, and this musical setting flowed out as if it had existed for as long as the words had been written.”
