Lyrics:
Gathered here from many churches,
one in worship and intent,
let us for the days that greet us
all our hopes to God present,
that our common life may be
marked by trust, and truly free.
May the spring of all our actions
be, O God, your love, your Word;
make us conscious of your presence,
Spirit-filled, to sharing stirred.
Help us, who your image bear,
for the good of each to care.
Give us grace to match our calling,
faith to leave the past behind;
hope to grow into our future,
love to shape the present time.
Let the servant-mind of Christ
in our lives be manifest.
Now ourselves anew committing
to each other and to you,
God, we ask that you will lead us
to the truth we need to do;
that the world may soon become
your great City of Shalom!
Author / Composer Comments
Composer Ron Klusmeier: These words were written by Fred especially for international and ecumenical worship events. The original first line was “Gathered here from many nations” as it was first used at the 1972 meeting of the World Council of Churches’ Central Committee in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Fred revised this text in 1996 and suggested that it might also be useful in local and national contexts if the word “nations” was replaced by “churches”.
