Lyrics:

Fall in snow and splash in rain.
Laugh and dance, thank God again.
Fall in snow and splash in rain.
Laugh and dance, thank God again.

Hug a friend and hold a hand.
Smile and sing, you’re in God’s band.
Hug a friend and hold a hand.
Smile and sing, you’re in God’s band.

Play a horn and roll a drum.
Help and build ‘til God’s world comes.
Play a horn and roll a drum.
Help and build ‘til God’s world comes.

Author / Composer Comments

An antiphonal or “call and answer” selection which is easy for children to sing if an adult or choir serves as ‘Voice 1’. It is also effective to have adult voices answer children’s voices.

From Ron & Walter’s “JUST LIKE SALT” collection:

Jesus emphasized that for us to be able to realize and be a part of God’s New Day, we must become childlike. He did not mean child-like in a simplistic way, but in a humble, open, and innocent way. (Matthew 18:3 & 4, Luke 18:17)

References are often made about children’s trustfulness. A child’s trust is not passive. It pushes to affirm in action what mind and heart have dreamed into existence. Jesus recognized this as an important element of ‘childlikeness’. He must also have realized the significance of children’s playfulness, their openness to God’s created world and to the new possibilities God’s Promise offers. With encouragement, children can exercise their imaginations to develop ideas which can help to make a difference in this world, and with faith, they can be challenged to carry them out.

This is a song which celebrates childlike enjoyment of some of the elements of God’s creation — “Fall in snow, splash in rain, laugh and dance” — as well as some of the most easily shared gifts we can offer to others — “Hug a friend, hold a hand, smile and sing, help and build”. Simple in text and melody, it can easily be sung by even the smallest child.
